Bonus Details and Our Verdict
Everything you need to know before you claim this offer.
Federal tax is only half the story. Players may also owe state or local income taxes on gambling winnings in addition to federal obligations — and that includes winnings converted from no deposit casino bonuses. If you cashed out from free play in a regulated state, your state revenue department wants a cut too. The rate and rules differ significantly depending on where you live and gamble.
Before we get into state-by-state numbers, the federal baseline: casinos are required to withhold 24% federal tax on gambling winnings that exceed $5,000 and where the payout is at least 300 times the amount of the bet, reported on Form W-2G. Gambling losses may be deducted on Schedule A only up to the amount of reported gambling winnings — losses cannot offset other income. And critically, casinos and sportsbooks report gambling winnings to the IRS at year-end; failure to report winnings independently can lead to serious financial and legal consequences. State agencies often receive the same data.
Real-money online casino gambling is legal and regulated in seven US states as of 2025: Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and West Virginia. Each has its own income tax treatment of gambling winnings. Check the full picture on bonus taxes at our dedicated guide: Taxes on No Deposit Casino Bonus Winnings: What US Players Must Know.

Do no deposit bonus winnings get taxed the same as regular casino winnings?
Yes. The IRS and state revenue departments do not distinguish between winnings from a no deposit bonus and winnings from real-money play you funded yourself. Once a bonus converts to withdrawable cash after meeting wagering requirements, that amount is taxable income. The state where you are physically located when you play is the one that can tax you — not necessarily your home state if you crossed a border. Always verify your specific situation with a tax professional because state residency rules vary.
Does it matter which operator you use?
Not for state tax purposes — the rate is set by your state, not the casino. That said, a lower-wagering offer means you reach withdrawable winnings sooner and with a cleaner paper trail. The Caesars Palace Online Casino No Deposit Bonus — 1x Wagering, 7-Day Window is a good example: at 1x playthrough, there is very little ambiguity about when the winnings become real income.
Are professional gamblers taxed differently at the state level?
Often yes. Professional gamblers file as self-employed federally, using Schedule C, and are subject to self-employment tax. Several states follow a similar logic and may allow different deductions — or impose additional taxes. If gambling is your primary income source, read up on the Professional Gambler Tax Rules: How No Deposit Casino Bonus Winnings Are Taxed Differently before you file.
What should you do before claiming any bonus?
Understand that state tax is a real cost. A $200 withdrawal in New Jersey could mean giving back more than $20 to the state — on top of federal obligations. Factor that in when evaluating whether a no deposit offer is actually worth your time.
